I’ve been through three or four other books and more wikis than I can count, and none of them has come close to this book in clearly conveying information.
One feature of other books that I’ve found frustrating is that they geginner contain exercises or examples with commands, options or arguments that haven’t been explained yet. I think that’s inevitable if you want to progress at any reasonable pace, but when this author does that, the text usually notes that it’s being done, and assures the reader that there will be a later explanation “in Chapter xx.
I was wasting a lot of time and effort looking back for what I had missed, assuming I was supposed to understand soynika I was doing. I’ve now had this book for about three weeks, and I’ve only worked my way about half-way through it’s not Vince Flynnbut I’ve clearly learned more in those three weeks than I did in almost two years of struggling through before. There are a few weakness, of course.
For the lijux part, though, the explanations of what you’re seeing on the page are clear enough that you can figure out the differences with little difficulty, and adjust accordingly.
Linux Administration: A Beginner’s Guide, Seventh Edition, 7th Edition
The author does occasionally refers to how things are done differently in Ubuntu- or Suse-based distros, but some of that information might be outdated e. This is high on Amazon’s lists for good reason. I use to have this book a few years ago when I got into my first IT job.
I knew web design well enough to land it but I had a lot to catch up on. This book helped tremendously.
I lent it out to everyone that needed help with Linux, especially working with the command line, and this was always perfect for getting them up to speed quickly. It may be old and outdated in some ways but it is still worth having in my opinion.
I thought about giving this book 2 stars, but decided on 3. It isn’t a bad book, which 2 stars would indicate.

There are key parts of this book where it is very vague when defining or explaining things. I feel like if Soyinka would have chopped out some of the sections and focused on some more depth, this has the potential to be a 5 star book. Perhaps I’m just wanting my book to be too comprehensive I’m currently about half way through and do plan on finishing the book though, as I said, it isn’t a bad book.
Arrived quickly and in fantastic condition. Very good glimpse into the world of Linux administration. It also came with unopened Red Hat CD and the book is in new condition. I have played with Linux Distro’s for years and usually liked them, but really did not know very much yet. I read a lot of books and it’s a rare occasion when I find the author who simply “nails it. It’s properly laid out, isn’t a phone book-sized waste of paper, but is large enough to contain a lot of real world details.
It gets right to the heart of the matter on each subject, and provides the right level of detail. When I saw the table of contents I ordered with Amazon’s 2-day shipping because I was so excited. I got the book today and have been reading for six straight hours. I almost feel like taking a day-off work tomorrow I’m a certified Oracle DBA on Unix systems so I can spend the day with this high-quality, just-what-I-wanted-and-needed book!
I’d give it 10 stars if I were able. If you’re new to Linux system admin, then this is truly perfect. Steve did a wonderful job with this book.
He answers nearly all the important questions you have before finishing the book. It has a really good section on firewalls in Linux as well as compiling your own kernel. The section on DNS was really quite nice. The CD in the book didn’t work, but that’s OK Linux can be downloaded for free If you’ve been afraid to really get your hands dirty setting up a Linux server, you’ve run out of excuses. Steve Shah’s book will get you through it.
This book is a god-sent book for beginner Linux administrators! I just can’t stress enough how perfectly good the book admnistration laid-out, how it is easy to read, and at the same time how good it covers the topics, given the book size, and the size of topics some of them needs BOOKS to be covered.
Linux Administration: A Beginner’s Guide, 7th Edition by Wale Soyinka
Sure, there’s a lot to learn, as the book doesn’t cover it all, but once you finish reading it, you’ll be standing on a very solid ground from which you can go to higher levels of Linux administration knowledge.
